When Someone Tells You What They Want, Believe Them

We often assume that the best gifts require a little mystery. That the giver should choose and the recipient should be surprised. That somehow, knowing exactly what someone wants makes the gift less personal.

But when someone tells you what they want, they are not taking away your opportunity to be thoughtful. They are giving you the opportunity to get it right.

You Asked. They Answered.

Think about how often we ask someone what they would like for their birthday, wedding, housewarming, baby shower or graduation. It’s important to take their answer seriously.

If your friend tells you that she has been saving for a particular coffee machine, believe her. If your brother says he needs a new suitcase before his next trip, believe him. If a couple tells you they are furnishing their new home and have created a registry, believe them.

They are helping you understand what would make them happy, and there is nothing wrong with accepting that information.

A Gift Does Not Become Less Thoughtful Because You Were Given a Clue

A gift can be completely unexpected and still be impersonal. Someone can spend a lot of money on something that looks impressive but has very little relevance to the person receiving it.

On the other hand, a gift can be something the recipient specifically asked for and still feel incredibly personal. The thoughtfulness is not necessarily in the guessing, but in the giving.

You still chose to participate. You still decided what you could afford. You still took the time to purchase it.

Sometimes “Anything is Fine” Isn’t Actually Helpful

You ask someone what they would like and you hear that answer when you know perfectly well that they have preferences. Now you are back where you started, scrolling through websites, and wondering whether you should buy the perfume, the dinner set, the air fryer, or simply send money.

This is one of the reasons gift registries can be such a thoughtful solution. Instead of making you guess, a registry gives you somewhere to start. Instead of wondering whether the gift will be useful, you already know it is something the recipient wants. Instead of worrying that someone else has bought the same thing, you can choose from what is available.

A Registry Isn’t a Demand

When someone creates a gift registry, you still have the freedom to decide whether you want to give, what you want to give, and how much you would like to spend.

A registry simply makes the process easier for everyone.

You might choose the smaller item because it fits comfortably within your budget. You might contribute towards something bigger. You might get together with other friends to purchase something collectively. The choice is still yours. The difference is that you are making your choice from a place of information rather than guesswork.

At SincerelyYours, we believe gift registries make the experience easier without taking away the heart of gifting. They allow celebrants to communicate what matters to them while giving their loved ones the freedom to choose how they would like to show up.

So the next time someone sends you a registry, make sure to use it. 😉
